How to Convert a Book PDF to EPUB — For Kindle, Kobo, and Apple Books (2026)
A PDF ebook on an e-reader is uncomfortable. The text is tiny, zooming shows only a fraction of the page, and you lose reflowable text — the feature that makes Kindle and Kobo so pleasant to read on. Converting the PDF to EPUB first fixes all of this.

Convert Book PDF to EPUB →Why book PDFs read poorly on e-readers
PDF is a fixed-layout format. The page is a fixed canvas — text sits at absolute positions and doesn't flow. On an e-reader screen (typically 6 or 7 inches), a standard letter-size PDF page must scale to roughly 65% of its original size — shrinking 12pt body text to about 8pt. Readable, but uncomfortable for extended sessions.
More importantly, e-reader features stop working on PDFs: you can't increase the font size without just zooming the fixed layout, the device can't remember your position across sessions as accurately, and X-Ray and vocabulary lookups don't work. EPUB unlocks the full e-reader experience.

Sending the EPUB to your e-reader
Kindle
The easiest method is Send to Kindle. Email your EPUB to your Kindle email address (found in Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings) and it appears wirelessly. Alternatively, connect your Kindle via USB and copy the EPUB to the Documents folder — the Kindle will find and convert it automatically.
Kobo
Connect your Kobo via USB and copy the EPUB to the root folder (not a subfolder). Eject and the device imports it into your library. Alternatively, use the Adobe Digital Editions method if you need DRM-protected library books, though for your own converted files, USB drag-and-drop is simpler.
Apple Books (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
Email the EPUB to yourself, open it on your iPhone, and tap "Open in Books." On Mac, drag the EPUB onto the Books icon in the Dock. The book syncs across all your Apple devices via iCloud. You can also AirDrop from Mac to iPhone or iPad.
reMarkable
EPUB files on reMarkable 2 render with reflow and adjustable font size, making them significantly better than PDFs. Upload via the reMarkable app (desktop or mobile), or email the EPUB to your reMarkable email address. The EPUB appears in your library within a minute.
What to expect from the conversion
Native digital PDFs (PDFs created from Word, InDesign, LaTeX, etc.) convert with excellent fidelity. Paragraph flow, headings, bold and italic, images, and tables are all preserved. The table of contents, if present in the PDF, typically carries over to EPUB navigation.
Scanned book PDFs (photographed or flatbed-scanned print books) convert via OCR text extraction. Quality depends on scan quality. Clean, high-resolution scans of clearly printed books convert very well. Old books with faded print or complex typography may have some OCR errors, but the result is still far more readable than the fixed-layout PDF on a small screen.
Image-heavy books (coffee table books, illustrated children's books, cookbooks with full-page photos) may be better left as PDFs, since the fixed layout is part of the design intent. EPUB conversion works best for text-primary books: novels, nonfiction, textbooks, research papers, and reports.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert any book PDF to EPUB?
Yes — if you own the PDF and it's not DRM-locked. PDFs that came from scanned pages also convert well; the converter handles OCR-extracted text from scanned sources. DRM-protected PDFs (like those from some library services) cannot be converted by any tool without first removing the DRM.
Will chapter navigation work in the converted EPUB?
If the original PDF has a bookmarked table of contents, those bookmarks often carry over to the EPUB's navigation. If not, the converter builds a table of contents from heading structure detected in the PDF. The result varies by PDF quality — native digital PDFs produce the best TOC.
Will images and figures be included?
Yes. Images embedded in the PDF (raster images, charts, diagrams) are preserved in the EPUB. For scanned books, the page images are extracted. Vector graphics may be rasterized. The image fidelity depends on how they were embedded in the original PDF.
Why is the EPUB better than PDF for e-readers?
E-readers are optimized for EPUB: text reflows to the screen size, you can change font size and style, the device tracks your page position and syncs across devices. PDFs on e-readers show fixed-layout pages that must be zoomed — uncomfortable on 6-inch Kindle or Kobo screens.
Is there a file size limit?
The free tier handles PDFs up to 50 MB. Most books are well under this. Large illustrated books or photo books may approach the limit. If your file exceeds 50 MB, try splitting the PDF by chapter before converting.
