How to Put an EPUB on a Kindle (All Methods — 2026)
Amazon Kindle now supports EPUB natively (since 2022). Here's every way to get an EPUB file onto your Kindle — Send to Kindle, USB, email, and the Kindle app.
Method 1: Send to Kindle App (Easiest — Supports EPUB)
Amazon's Send to Kindle app for Windows and Mac sends EPUB files directly to your Kindle without any conversion:
- Download Send to Kindle from Amazon (amazon.com/sendtokindle).
- Sign in with your Amazon account.
- Drag and drop your .epub file onto the app.
- Select your Kindle device from the list.
- Click Send. The EPUB appears in your Kindle library within minutes.
Since 2022, Kindle devices running firmware 5.14.x or later support EPUB natively. The file is stored as-is without conversion. Older Kindle models automatically convert EPUB to Amazon's internal format during transfer.
Method 2: Email to Kindle (yourname@kindle.com)
- Find your Kindle email address: go to Amazon → Account → Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings.
- Add your sending email address to the approved sender list.
- Attach your .epub file to an email and send it to yourname@kindle.com.
- The EPUB appears in your Kindle library in 1–5 minutes (requires Wi-Fi on the Kindle).
Subject line and body content don't matter. File size limit is 50 MB per email.
Method 3: USB Cable (No Internet Required)
- Connect your Kindle to your computer via USB. It mounts as a drive.
- Open the Kindle drive and navigate to the Documents folder.
- Copy your .epub file into the Documents folder.
- Safely eject the Kindle. The EPUB appears in your library immediately.
USB transfer works on all Kindle models, including older ones that don't support EPUB natively. For those, use Calibre to convert EPUB to MOBI or AZW3 before transferring (see below).
Method 4: Calibre Wireless Transfer
Calibre can send books to your Kindle over Wi-Fi without a USB cable:
- Install Calibre. Go to Connect/Share → Connect to Kindle via Wi-Fi.
- On your Kindle, go to Experimental Browser → Connect to Calibre. (Or enter the IP address shown in Calibre.)
- In Calibre, right-click the EPUB → Send to device → Send to main memory.
Calibre converts EPUB to AZW3 format automatically for Kindle compatibility if needed.
Method 5: Kindle App on Phone/Tablet (iOS and Android)
The Kindle app doesn't directly import EPUB files, but you can:
- Use Send to Kindle on your computer to push the EPUB to your account, then it syncs to the Kindle app.
- On Android: use the Share menu → Send to Kindle (if Send to Kindle app is installed).
- On iOS: use the Share menu → Send to Kindle. Note: the iOS app converts EPUB to Kindle format automatically.

Converting EPUB to MOBI/AZW3 for Older Kindles
For Kindle models that don't support EPUB, convert first with Calibre:
ebook-convert book.epub book.azw3
AZW3 (KF8) is Amazon's EPUB 3 equivalent and the best format for modern content. Use MOBI only for very old Kindle models (Kindle 1–3).
