How to Read EPUB Files on Kobo Nia (2026 Guide)
Kobo Nia is Kobo's entry-level 6-inch e-reader with a 212 ppi screen and adjustable front light. Despite being the most affordable Kobo, it supports EPUB natively. This guide covers every way to load EPUB files onto your Kobo Nia and tips for getting the best reading experience.
Kobo Nia Overview
Kobo Nia launched in 2020 as Kobo's most affordable e-reader. It features a 6-inch 212 ppi E Ink display, an adjustable ComfortLight front light, and 8 GB of storage. It supports EPUB and EPUB3 natively, which means you can load any DRM-free EPUB directly without format conversion. Kobo Nia integrates with the Kobo Store and with OverDrive for library borrowing.
While Kobo Nia has been succeeded by the Kobo Clara 2E (300 ppi, waterproof), Nia owners continue to receive firmware updates and the device remains fully functional for EPUB reading.

How to Load EPUB Files onto Kobo Nia
Method 1 — Send to Kobo (Wireless)
- On your Kobo Nia, go to Settings → Account to find your Send to Kobo email address (e.g. yourname@kobo.com).
- On your computer or phone, email the EPUB file as an attachment to that address.
- On your Nia, go to Settings → Sync. The book appears in your library within seconds.
Method 2 — USB Transfer
- Connect your Kobo Nia to your computer with a micro-USB cable.
- The Nia appears as a USB storage drive on your computer.
- Drag EPUB files into the root folder of the Kobo drive.
- Safely eject the Kobo. It scans for new books and they appear in your library automatically.
Method 3 — Dropbox Sync
- On your Nia, go to Settings → Account → Dropbox and link your Dropbox account.
- Add EPUB files to the Apps/Kobo folder in Dropbox.
- Sync your Nia (Settings → Sync) to pull in books wirelessly.
Converting PDF to EPUB for Kobo Nia
Kobo Nia can open PDFs but the experience is poor on a 6-inch screen — most PDFs are formatted for A4 and require zooming. Converting to EPUB gives you a reflowable document that fills the Nia's screen perfectly at your preferred font size.
- Go to toolkit.bot and upload your PDF.
- Click Convert. Download the EPUB.
- Transfer to your Kobo Nia using any of the three methods above.
Reading Tips for Kobo Nia
- Font and size: Tap the centre of the screen while reading, then tap the Aa icon to change font, size, line spacing, and margins. Publisher default fonts are often too small — bump up one or two sizes for comfortable reading.
- Front light: Swipe down from the top of the screen to adjust brightness. No colour temperature adjustment (unlike Kobo Clara 2E or Libra 2).
- OverDrive / Libby: Set up library borrowing via Settings → Get Books → Library. Borrow EPUB loans directly onto the Nia without a computer.
- Calibre: Use Calibre desktop software to manage your Kobo library over USB. The KoboTouchExtended plugin unlocks additional features like sleep-screen customisation and font sideloading.
- Collections: Organise books into shelves (Kobo's equivalent of folders) via My Books → Add to shelf. Useful if you read across multiple genres or projects.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Kobo Nia support EPUB?
- Yes. Kobo Nia supports EPUB and EPUB3 natively, as well as PDF, MOBI, CBR, CBZ, and other formats. EPUB is the recommended format because it reflows text to match your preferred font size and screen orientation. PDF files are supported but do not reflow.
- How do I add EPUB files to Kobo Nia?
- Three methods: (1) Email the EPUB to your Send to Kobo address (Settings → Account to find it). (2) Connect via USB and drag EPUB files onto the Kobo drive. (3) Link Dropbox in Settings and sync books from your Dropbox folder. Method 1 and 3 are wireless; Method 2 is fastest for large batches.
- How does Kobo Nia compare to Kindle Paperwhite?
- Kobo Nia (212 ppi, 6 in) has a lower resolution than Kindle Paperwhite (300 ppi, 6.8 in) and lacks waterproofing. However, Kobo Nia supports EPUB natively (Kindle now does too), has no lock-screen ads, integrates with Overdrive/Libby for library books, and is cheaper. For budget readers who want native EPUB support, Nia is a solid choice.
- Can I read library books on Kobo Nia?
- Yes. Kobo Nia supports OverDrive and Libby library lending. Go to the Kobo Store app on your Nia or set up Overdrive via Settings. Search your library's digital collection, borrow an EPUB, and it downloads directly to your Nia. No computer required.
- Is Kobo Nia still available?
- Kobo Nia was released in 2020 and has been succeeded by the Kobo Clara 2E as Kobo's entry-level model. If you own a Nia, it continues to receive firmware updates. Kobo Clara 2E offers a better 300 ppi screen, waterproofing, and a recycled-plastic body.
