How to Convert a PDF Ebook You Bought to EPUB — Read on Kindle, Kobo, or Apple Books (2026)

You bought an ebook as a PDF — from an author's website, a Humble Bundle, Gumroad, or a publisher's direct store — and now you want to read it on your Kindle, Kobo, or phone without zooming in and scrolling. Converting to EPUB first is the answer. Here's how to do it.

Free, no account needed. Works in any browser.

First: is your PDF DRM-free?

Before converting, check whether your PDF is DRM-free:

Most PDF ebooks from indie authors, Humble Bundle, Gumroad, and DRM-free publishers (O'Reilly, No Starch, Pragmatic Programmers, Tor Books) are DRM-free. Most PDF ebooks from major retail storefronts (Amazon, Apple Books, Google Play, Barnes & Noble) are DRM-protected.

How to convert your PDF ebook to EPUB

  1. Go to pdf2epub.toolkit.bot
  2. Click "Choose PDF to convert" and select your PDF ebook file
  3. Wait 30–90 seconds depending on page count
  4. Download the EPUB file

The EPUB will have the same text content as your PDF, reformatted for reflowable reading. Chapter headings, paragraph breaks, bold/italic, images, and tables are all preserved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert any PDF ebook I bought to EPUB?

You can convert DRM-free PDF ebooks — those that open without a password and without Adobe Digital Editions authentication. Many small publishers, indie authors on Gumroad, Bundle purchases (Humble Bundle, Story Bundle), and direct author sales provide DRM-free PDFs. If your PDF opens freely in any PDF viewer, it is DRM-free and can be converted. PDFs that require Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) or a specific app to open are DRM-protected and cannot be converted without first removing the DRM — which you should only do for your own legally purchased books.

Will the converted EPUB look like the original ebook layout?

For text-primary ebooks (novels, nonfiction, memoirs, essays), yes — text reflows with clean paragraph structure and headings. For heavily designed books (illustrated books, cookbooks, children's books, art books), the fixed layout is part of the design and EPUB conversion may not preserve the visual design. The text content is preserved, but page layouts, custom typography, and complex image arrangements may be simplified.

Where do people commonly buy DRM-free PDF ebooks?

Popular sources: (1) Humble Bundle and Story Bundle — frequent ebook bundles, almost always DRM-free. (2) Gumroad — many indie authors sell DRM-free directly. (3) Smashwords / Draft2Digital — ebook storefronts that support DRM-free purchases. (4) Publisher direct sites — Tor Books, O'Reilly (technical books), Pragmatic Programmers, No Starch Press all sell DRM-free. (5) Author's personal websites — many authors sell direct with no DRM.

How do I send the converted EPUB to my Kindle?

Email the EPUB to your Kindle email address. Find it in Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. Send the EPUB file as an attachment — Amazon auto-converts EPUB to Kindle format and delivers it wirelessly. It appears in your Kindle library within a few minutes.

Will my bookmarks and reading position sync if I convert to EPUB?

If you haven't started reading the PDF, there's nothing to sync — just convert and start reading in EPUB. If you've been reading the PDF and want to continue in the EPUB, you'll need to find your place manually. Your annotations in the original PDF are not transferred to the EPUB. Going forward, your EPUB reader will track your position and sync across devices (if your reader supports sync).
