Annotating EPUBs in NeoReader: Tips
- Highlight text: tap and hold to select, choose a highlight colour. On colour BOOX models, five colours are available.
- Freehand notes: switch to handwriting mode via the toolbar. Write in the margin with the stylus — notes layer over the EPUB content.
- Export highlights: in NeoReader, tap Menu → Export → exports highlights as a text or PDF summary.
- Readwise sync: install Readwise Reader from the Play Store on your BOOX — highlights sync to your Readwise account and appear alongside Kindle and Kobo highlights.
- KOReader: install for advanced reflow, night mode, and Calibre wireless sync. Highlights can be exported to a sidecar file for processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does BOOX support EPUB files natively?
- Yes. All BOOX devices support EPUB natively through the built-in NeoReader app. NeoReader provides reflowable text rendering, adjustable font size and typeface, line spacing control, night mode, and highlighting. Because BOOX runs full Android, you can also install KOReader, Readwise Reader, Moon+ Reader, or any other reading app from the Play Store or APK for additional features.
- How do I transfer an EPUB to my BOOX device?
- Four methods: (1) USB — connect with the supplied USB-C cable, accept the file transfer prompt on the device, and drag the EPUB to the Books folder on the device storage; (2) BOOX Assistant app — install on Mac or Windows, connect your device, and drag files in; (3) BOOX cloud sync — upload via my.boox.com or the BOOX app; (4) Third-party sync — install Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive on your BOOX from the Play Store and sync files directly.
- Which BOOX model is best for academic reading and annotation?
- For academic reading and annotation: BOOX Note Air 3 C (10.3 in colour, stylus included, 300 ppi) for colour diagrams and highlighted text; BOOX Tab Ultra C Pro (10.3 in, runs desktop Android apps) for multitasking alongside reading; BOOX Page (7 in) for portable everyday reading without annotation needs. KOReader on BOOX Note Air gives excellent PDF reflow and column-stripping for two-column journal PDFs.
- Can I use KOReader on BOOX for better PDF reflow?
- Yes. KOReader is a highly recommended alternative to NeoReader for reading academic PDFs on BOOX. Install it via APK from koreader.rocks — it provides aggressive PDF text reflow that strips two-column layouts and renders single-column text at whatever font size you choose. For academic journal PDFs that were originally designed for A4 print, KOReader reflow on BOOX often gives a better reading experience than converting the PDF to EPUB first.
- Why convert a PDF to EPUB instead of reading the PDF directly on BOOX?
- Reading PDFs directly on BOOX (even with reflow) works well for most papers, but EPUB has advantages: cleaner text rendering without reflow artefacts, more consistent chapter navigation, and better highlight sync if you use Readwise Reader on BOOX to sync to your Readwise account. EPUB is also more portable across other devices (Kindle, Kobo, phone apps) if you read on multiple screens.
