How to Read EPUB Files in Calibre — Viewer Guide and Alternatives

Calibre is primarily a library manager and converter, but it has a built-in EPUB viewer that works well for checking converted files and casual reading. Here's how to use it and when to switch to a dedicated reading app instead.

Opening an EPUB in Calibre's Viewer

  1. Add the EPUB to your Calibre library (drag and drop, or click Add books).
  2. Click the book to select it, then click View in the top toolbar (or press V).
  3. The Calibre viewer opens the EPUB in a separate window.

You can also open an EPUB directly without adding it to your library: go to Preferences → Viewer, or simply double-click the .epub file if Calibre is set as the default handler on your system.

Reading a Converted PDF in Calibre

If you've converted a PDF to EPUB using toolkit.bot and want to verify the output on your desktop before loading it onto an e-reader, open it in Calibre's viewer. Check that headings appear in the table of contents, text reflows correctly at different font sizes, and images are positioned correctly. Then transfer the verified .epub to your device.
