How to Read EPUB Files in Calibre — Viewer Guide and Alternatives
Calibre is primarily a library manager and converter, but it has a built-in EPUB viewer that works well for checking converted files and casual reading. Here's how to use it and when to switch to a dedicated reading app instead.
Opening an EPUB in Calibre's Viewer
- Add the EPUB to your Calibre library (drag and drop, or click Add books).
- Click the book to select it, then click View in the top toolbar (or press V).
- The Calibre viewer opens the EPUB in a separate window.
You can also open an EPUB directly without adding it to your library: go to Preferences → Viewer, or simply double-click the .epub file if Calibre is set as the default handler on your system.
Calibre Viewer Features
- Font size: Ctrl + / Ctrl - (or pinch on touchscreen)
- Font family: Preferences → Fonts — set a custom reading font
- Colour scheme: Light, dark, sepia, and custom themes in Preferences → Colors
- Bookmarks: Ctrl+B to add a bookmark; access via the Bookmarks panel
- Search: Ctrl+F — full-text search across the entire EPUB
- Table of Contents: Click the Contents icon in the top bar or press F9
- Reading progress: Position shown as percentage in the bottom bar
- Lookup definitions: Select a word and press Ctrl+L
- Keyboard navigation: Arrow keys, Page Up/Down, or Space to scroll
When to Use Calibre Viewer
Good for:
- Checking a converted EPUB before sending it to a device
- Quick desktop reading without installing another app
- Verifying heading structure and table of contents are correct
Limitations:
- No sync across devices — your reading position stays on that computer
- No cloud library — just local files
- No built-in EPUB store or library integration
- Heavier than lightweight dedicated readers
Better Alternatives for Daily Reading
