How to Open and Read EPUB Files on a Chromebook (2026)

Chromebooks don't have a built-in EPUB reader, but Chrome OS has the Google Play Store — which means you can install any Android ebook app. There are also browser-based options that require no installation at all. Here's what works.

Option 1: Google Play Books (easiest, built-in on most Chromebooks)

Google Play Books comes pre-installed on most Chromebooks and is the simplest way to read EPUBs.

  1. Open Google Play Books from the launcher, or go to play.google.com/books in Chrome
  2. Click Upload files (top right) and select your EPUB
  3. The book appears in your library — click to read
  4. Full font size control, night mode, and bookmarks
  5. Syncs to your Android phone and tablet automatically

This is the recommended option for most Chromebook users — no extra apps, syncs with your Google account.

Option 2: Readium Web Reader (no install, browser-based)

Readium has a web version that reads EPUB files entirely in the browser — nothing to install.

  1. Go to readium.org and find the web reader link
  2. Click Open EPUB and select your file from Files (Downloads or Google Drive)
  3. The EPUB renders in the browser tab with navigation and font controls

Good for quick reads without uploading to a cloud service.

Option 3: Android apps via Google Play Store

If your Chromebook supports Android apps (most do since 2017), you can install any Android EPUB reader:

To install: open the Play Store app on your Chromebook, search for the app, and install normally.

Option 4: Kindle app + Send to Kindle

Install the Kindle Android app from the Play Store, then send EPUBs to your Kindle account via the Send to Kindle website. The EPUB appears in the Kindle app on your Chromebook.

Finding EPUB files on your Chromebook

Downloaded EPUBs land in the Downloads folder in the Files app. You can also store EPUBs in Google Drive and open them from there — Google Play Books handles Drive files directly.

Reading a PDF on a Chromebook with adjustable fonts

Chrome OS can open PDFs in the built-in viewer, but you can't adjust fonts or reflow the text. Converting to EPUB first gives you all the reader controls:

  1. Open Chrome and go to toolkit.bot/pdf2epub
  2. Upload your PDF — conversion takes 15–60 seconds
  3. Download the EPUB to your Downloads folder
  4. Open with Google Play Books or your preferred reader

Convert your PDF to EPUB — read it in Google Play Books on Chromebook.
