How to Convert EPUB to Word (DOCX) — Free, 3 Methods

You have an EPUB file and need to edit its content, share it with someone who doesn't have an EPUB reader, or get the text into a Word document for formatting. Here are three free ways to convert EPUB to Word DOCX — and when each one makes sense.

Why Convert EPUB to Word?

Method 1: Calibre (Best Results, Free)

Calibre converts EPUB to DOCX reliably, preserving headings, paragraphs, and basic formatting.

  1. Download Calibre from calibre-ebook.com (free, Windows/Mac/Linux).
  2. Click Add books → select your .epub file.
  3. Right-click → Convert books → Convert individually.
  4. Set Output format to DOCX in the top-right dropdown.
  5. Click OK. Open the containing folder to find the .docx file.

What carries over: Chapter headings, paragraph text, images, basic text formatting (bold, italic), and the table of contents structure. Complex EPUB3 features (audio, video, advanced CSS) are dropped.

What doesn't: Custom fonts, precise spacing, page-break positioning, and sidebar/callout layouts won't survive — DOCX is a different layout model than EPUB's HTML.

Method 2: Online Converters (No Install)

Services like Zamzar, Convertio, and CloudConvert convert EPUB to DOCX in a browser. Upload your .epub, choose DOCX output, and download the result. Free tiers allow files up to 25–50 MB.

When to use: You can't install Calibre, or you need a quick one-off conversion. Caution: Your file is uploaded to a third-party server — avoid this for sensitive or confidential EPUB content.

Method 3: Open in a Reading App, Copy-Paste

For short documents or single chapters, the simplest approach is opening the EPUB in a reading app (Calibre's viewer, Apple Books, or Thorium Reader) and copying the text directly into Word. Formatting will be lost, but you get clean text for repurposing quickly.

Formatting Expectations After Conversion

No EPUB-to-Word converter produces a publication-ready DOCX. Expect to spend time cleaning up:

Better Alternative: Edit the EPUB Directly

If the goal is fixing content errors, correcting headings, or updating text inside the EPUB, editing the EPUB directly with Sigil (free) or Calibre's built-in editor is faster than converting to Word and back. See How to Edit an EPUB File for a step-by-step guide.

Coming From a PDF?

If your original source was a PDF and you want the text in Word, the cleanest workflow is: PDF → EPUB (via toolkit.bot) → DOCX (via Calibre). This preserves document structure better than going PDF → DOCX directly, which often scrambles multi-column and complex layouts.
