Kobo EPUB Guide: Sideloading, Reading Settings, and Format Tips
Kobo is the best mainstream e-reader for EPUB — it reads the format natively without conversion, unlike Kindle. Here's how to get the most out of EPUB on Kobo, from sideloading to typography settings.
Why Kobo for EPUB?
- Native EPUB and EPUB 3 support — no conversion needed
- Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) DRM support — read library e-books sideloaded via Overdrive/Libby
- Full typography control: fonts, margins, line spacing, text weight
- Side-loading without any Amazon account or proprietary ecosystem
- Kobo Plus subscription includes access to library books in many countries
Sideloading EPUB Files onto Kobo
Method 1: USB (Most Reliable)
- Connect Kobo to your computer via USB — it appears as a USB drive
- Open the drive and navigate to the root folder
- Drag-and-drop your EPUB files directly into the root (not into any subfolder)
- Safely eject the device — books appear in your library on disconnect
EPUB files placed in subfolders are still detected by Kobo's library scan, but the root is safest.
Method 2: Calibre Wireless Transfer
- Enable Kobo's wireless option: Settings → Beta Features → Enable Calibre Wireless
- In Calibre, go to Connect/Share → Start wireless device server
- Right-click a book → Send to device → Send to main memory
Method 3: Send via Email (Kobo Plus)
Kobo accounts support sending EPUBs to your device via email (similar to Send to Kindle). Check your Kobo account settings for the device email address.
Reading Settings That Matter for EPUB Quality
Kobo has more typography options than most e-readers. Access them via the Aa button while reading:
| Setting | Recommendation for converted EPUBs |
|---|---|
| Font | Georgia or Kobo Nickel — good for body text; avoid ultra-condensed fonts |
| Font size | Personal preference; converted EPUBs use em units so any size works |
| Line spacing | 1.5× or "Normal" — converted PDFs may have tight spacing; increase if needed |
| Margins | Medium — wider margins improve readability on smaller screens |
| Justify text | On — most e-books are designed for justified text |
| Publisher defaults | On — respects embedded CSS from the EPUB; Off forces your font/size preferences |
Publisher Defaults: On vs Off
This is the most important Kobo setting for converted EPUBs:
- Publisher Defaults On — uses the EPUB's embedded CSS (fonts, spacing, formatting). Good for well-formatted EPUBs from toolkit.bot.
- Publisher Defaults Off — ignores embedded CSS and uses your chosen font/size. Better if the converted EPUB has formatting issues from the source PDF.
If your converted EPUB looks wrong (odd spacing, tiny text), try toggling Publisher Defaults off.
Library e-Books via Adobe DRM
Kobo devices support Adobe Digital Editions DRM used by most library e-book services:
- Create a free Adobe ID at adobe.com
- On your Kobo: Settings → My Account → Adobe Digital Editions → Authorize
- Borrow an EPUB from your library via Overdrive/Libby → Download → Open in Kobo
Converting PDFs for Kobo
PDFs display poorly on Kobo's e-ink screen — fixed layout, no text reflow, tiny text. Convert to EPUB first:
- Convert with toolkit.bot — handles OCR for scanned PDFs, two-column layouts, tables
- Transfer via USB or Calibre wireless
- The EPUB reads with full text reflow, adjustable font size, and Kobo's typography settings
