How to Convert PDF to EPUB on Chromebook — Free, No Install
Chromebooks run ChromeOS — a lightweight, browser-first operating system. You can't install traditional desktop software like Calibre directly, but you can still convert PDFs to EPUB quickly using browser-based tools. Here's how.
Method 1: toolkit.bot — Browser-Based (Easiest)
Since toolkit.bot runs entirely in the browser, it works on any Chromebook with no installation needed:
- Open Chrome and go to toolkit.bot
- Click "Choose PDF" and select your file from Files (or Google Drive)
- Wait 20–30 seconds for conversion
- Download the EPUB to your Downloads folder
Works on all Chromebook models including older ARM-based devices. File size limit: 50 MB free.
Method 2: Google Play Books — Convert and Read in One Step
Many newer Chromebooks have access to the Google Play Store. If yours does:
- Convert your PDF to EPUB with toolkit.bot (step above)
- Open the Google Play Books app (or play.google.com/books in the browser)
- Upload the EPUB — it syncs to all your devices
Method 3: Linux (Beta) + Calibre
Chromebooks with Linux (Beta) enabled can run full desktop Linux apps including Calibre:
- Enable Linux: Settings → Advanced → Developers → Linux development environment → Turn on
- In the Linux terminal:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install calibre - Convert:
ebook-convert input.pdf output.epub
Linux Beta is available on most Chromebooks made after 2019. Note: Calibre's PDF-to-EPUB quality is inconsistent on complex layouts — for better results, use toolkit.bot even on Linux-enabled Chromebooks.
Reading the EPUB on a Chromebook
After conversion, you can read EPUBs on ChromeOS with:
- Google Play Books — upload via browser or app, syncs with Android
- EPUBReader extension — add to Chrome, then open EPUB files directly in the browser
- Thorium Reader — available via Linux (Beta) if enabled
Transferring EPUBs to a Kindle or Kobo from Chromebook
- Kindle — use Send to Kindle at send.amazon.com (browser upload) or email to your @kindle.com address
- Kobo — connect via USB and copy to the device's storage using the Files app; or use Kobo's desktop sync (requires Linux Beta + Wine, complex)
What About Android Apps?
Chromebooks that support Android apps can run any Android e-reader: Kindle, Kobo, Moon+ Reader, or ReadEra. These apps read EPUB files from local storage. Install from the Play Store, then open local EPUB files from the Downloads folder.
