How to Open an EPUB File on Any Device (2026)
EPUB is the universal ebook format, but it doesn't open with a double-click on every device. Here's the fastest method for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle, and Kobo.
Windows
Windows has no built-in EPUB reader. The fastest options:
- Microsoft Edge — drag the EPUB file onto an Edge window. Edge has a built-in EPUB reader since 2023 with adjustable font, dark mode, and table of contents navigation. No install needed.
- Calibre — free, open source. Install from calibre-ebook.com. Double-click any EPUB to open in the Calibre viewer. Also manages your full library.
- Thorium Reader — dedicated EPUB 3 reader from EDRLab with good accessibility support. Download from edrlab.org.
Mac
macOS includes Apple Books (formerly iBooks). Double-click an EPUB file and it opens in Books automatically — or drag it to the Books app icon. Books supports EPUB 3, syncs via iCloud, and has good font and layout controls.
Alternative: Calibre for Mac if you prefer a library manager or need format conversion.
iPhone and iPad
Tap the EPUB file — in Safari, Mail, or Files — and choose "Open in Books". Apple Books opens it immediately. Alternatively, share to Kindle, Kobo, or any other EPUB reader app you've installed.

Android
Android has no default EPUB handler. Install one of:
- Google Play Books — free, already installed on most Android phones. Upload the EPUB at play.google.com/books or tap "Upload to Play Books" from the share menu.
- Moon+ Reader — best dedicated reader for Android; supports custom fonts, complex layouts, and reading statistics. Free version available.
- Kobo or Kindle apps — if you use those ecosystems.

Kindle
Kindle has supported EPUB natively since 2022. Two methods:
- Send to Kindle — email the EPUB to your-name@kindle.com, or use send.amazon.com to upload it from a browser. The EPUB appears in your Kindle library within minutes.
- USB transfer — connect Kindle via USB, drag the EPUB to the
documentsfolder.

Kobo
Kobo e-readers handle EPUB natively. Connect via USB and copy the EPUB to the device. The Kobo desktop app (Windows/Mac) also syncs via WiFi. Kobo supports EPUB 3 including fonts, complex layouts, and highlights.
Chromebook
Use Google Play Books (installed by default) or install an Android EPUB reader from the Play Store. Alternatively, use the Readium web reader at readium.firebaseapp.com in Chrome — no install needed.

Linux
Install Foliate: sudo apt install foliate (Ubuntu/Debian) or flatpak install flathub com.github.johnfactotum.Foliate. Open any EPUB with it. Alternatively, Calibre includes a built-in viewer.
What if your file won't open?
If the EPUB won't open or shows errors, it may have DRM (Digital Rights Management). DRM-protected EPUBs from library apps (OverDrive/Libby) only open in Adobe Digital Editions or the specific library app they were borrowed from. Non-DRM EPUBs open in any app above.
