How to Convert a Thesis or Dissertation to EPUB (Free)
Thesis PDFs are notoriously hard to convert. They often have two-column sections, multi-page tables, footnotes, and complex citation blocks. Most converters mangle them. Here's how to get a clean, readable EPUB in under a minute.
Why convert your thesis to EPUB?
- Read comfortably on a Kindle, Kobo, or iPad — text reflows to any screen size
- Search chapter headings and citations with your e-reader's built-in search
- Share a version that renders well on mobile (PDF does not)
- Satisfy EPUB accessibility requirements for institutional repositories
Step-by-step: convert in your browser
- Go to toolkit.bot/pdf2epub — no account, no install
- Click Choose file or drag your thesis PDF onto the upload area
- Click Convert — conversion takes 15–90 seconds depending on length
- Download the EPUB file when the button appears
Thesis-specific features that matter: the converter detects two-column layouts and reflowable them as single-column body text; footnotes are preserved as proper EPUB footnotes (not cut off at page breaks); tables are rendered as HTML <table> elements, not images.
Handling footnotes and endnotes
Footnotes in academic PDFs are often anchored to specific page positions. During conversion, footnotes are grouped per chapter and rendered at the end of each chapter section — consistent with how ebook readers display them. Endnote sections are detected by heading and preserved in place.
Long dissertations (>200 pages)
Our free tier handles files up to 50 MB and 300 pages. Most dissertations fall well within that range. If you have a longer document, split it by chapter using a free tool like iLovePDF Split, convert each part, and merge the EPUBs.
Two-column academic layout
Many dissertations include sections typeset in two columns — for example, results tables or appendices. toolkit.bot detects two-column regions and reflows them as single-column text, preserving reading order. Calibre does not handle this reliably. See Calibre vs toolkit.bot →
